Purpose Statement: This writing sample was created to promote the Purple Ribbon Event, a Rexburg initiative focused on raising awareness about domestic violence prevention. The goal of this piece was to inform students about the event while encouraging engagement and participation. In writing it, I focused on presenting a sensitive topic in a clear, respectful, and approachable way for a student audience. This sample demonstrates my ability to create purposeful content that communicates important information while remaining engaging and audience focused.
On Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon, the Family Crisis Center (FCC) is holding its annual Purple Ribbon Run where participants can run or walk 1 mile or 5k, held at Jefferson Lake, Rigby Idaho.
There are several ways to participate for free. According to Chloe Aponte, Public Awareness Coordinator, there is a link or QR code on the FCC’s website, Facebook and Instagram under Rexburg Family Crisis Center where you can sign up for the race. You can also show up to the race and register right there.
Anyone can be part of the race as a survivor/client of the FCC, or in support of your loved ones and run along with them. There will be medals awarded for first, second and third place. Another option is being a sponsor and volunteering to help at the race. You can call or come into the center to register as a volunteer, and you will be given a badge, a race kit with a bib, safety pins, coupons and a raffle ticket.
There are various ways of sponsoring aside from volunteering. First, sponsoring through a monetary donation. According to Chloe Aponte and Daniel Flores, who is also a Public Awareness Coordinator, your company logo will be placed on materials to promote the event, your company will be mentioned on social media content, and your company will receive recognition in speeches and interviews. You can also donate gift cards, coupons, etc., as well as provide information to clients or patrons about the FCC and the resources they offer.
This event increases awareness of these issues in society and creates opportunities for the community to come together and show support and love to over 200 clients of the FCC. Aponte says that creating awareness of the FCC is as crucial as creating awareness of the domestic abuse issue because that way, victims can know where to look for help and know they are not alone while taking full advantage of the resources provided for them.
The FCC is a non-profit local organization supported by the state and federal agencies through grants. Any contributions will be greatly appreciated and well used. These donations are given to domestic abuse survivors, sexual assault survivors, stalking and child abuse survivors in different forms of help.
“Seeing people thrive is really gratifying,” said Chloe Aponte.
The center provides help for Physical Needs, such as safety planning, emergency shelter, referrals to financial and legal resources, assistance in obtaining other services, referrals to scholarship programs, transitional housing, food bank and thrift store access, and sexual Assault (SANE) exams.
They also provide support for Emotional and Mental Needs like understanding the effects of trauma and triggers, counseling resources, coping skills, improving self-image, dealing with shame or blame, healing resources and court advocacy and attendance.
Lastly, they support by covering your relationship needs. The center provides support mapping, support groups, learning to build trust, how to tell others, setting boundaries, dealing with grief and loss as well as information for family and friends on how to reach and help your loved ones.
If you or a loved one is in an abusive relationship of any kind, please contact the Family Crisis Center and if necessary, the authorities. Seek help and don’t be scared or ashamed of your situation because there is an entire community ready, equipped and licensed to help you and whoever may be involved in the abuse to create a better life for yourselves.
